The Brake Authority BA4051B Burly brake pads represent braking excellence for MTB, designed specifically for Avid Elixir, DB1, DB3 and SRAM Level L/LT brakes. Featuring a type B sintered metal compound, these pads offer exceptional longevity and remarkable braking power in all conditions, from XC riding to the most demanding enduro.

Technical highlights of the Burly compound

  • High-performance sintered metal: Sintering process under high pressure and temperature (up to 600°C) creating a homogeneous compound composed of fused metallic particles. This technology guarantees exceptional resistance to high thermal stress.
  • Remarkable longevity: Lifespan significantly superior to organic pads thanks to the hardness of the sintered material. Ideal for demanding riders who chain rides or practice in aggressive conditions (mud, steep slopes).
  • Rotor friendly: Burly formulation optimized to balance performance and rotor preservation. Unlike ultra-aggressive compounds, type B limits premature wear of braking surfaces.
  • Progressive and modular braking: Excellent proportionality between lever effort and power delivered. Allows precise modulation, essential in technical riding (obstacles, tight switchbacks).
  • All-weather versatility: Consistent performance in dry conditions as well as in rain or mud. Sintered metal maintains its bite even when conditions deteriorate.

Compatibility and standards

These BA4051B pads are 100% compatible with a wide range of hydraulic brakes:

  • Avid Elixir: all versions (Elixir 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, CR, CR Mag, R, Carbon, X0)
  • Avid DB: DB1, DB3, as well as compatibility with SRAM DB5
  • SRAM Level: Level L, Level LT (formerly Level Trail)
  • SRAM high-end: X0, X7, X9, XX

Supplied per pair with spring (if applicable depending on caliper), ready to install. Pre-bedded pads for optimal braking from the first rides (complete bedding-in recommended over 20-30 progressive brakings).

Sintered metal technology: why choose the Burly type?

Sintering is an advanced metallurgical process: metal powders (copper, bronze, special alloys) are compacted then heated to very high temperature without reaching melting point. The particles weld together, creating a dense and resistant structure. The result: a compound capable of withstanding up to 600°C (versus ~400°C for organics) while maintaining a stable friction coefficient.

  • Advantages of Burly (Type B):
    • Ideal for XC-AM-Enduro: intensive use without compromising reliability
    • Rapid temperature rise: 2-3 brakings sufficient to reach optimal efficiency
    • Consistent braking: no "all or nothing" effect, perfect for cornering
    • Fade resistance: power maintained even on long descents
  • Difference with Aggressive and Ceramic versions: Burly prioritizes durability and rotor respect, while Aggressive offers maximum bite (intensive Enduro-DH) and Ceramic adds a thermal shield for pure competition (DH, extreme descents).

Usage and maintenance tips

  • Bedding-in essential: Even pre-bedded, perform 20-30 progressive brakings to perfectly adapt the contact surface to the rotor. Avoid hard braking when cold.
  • Regular inspection: Check pad thickness (wear indicator if present). Replace when thickness reaches 1 mm or less to preserve rotors.
  • Rotor cleaning: Use isopropyl alcohol or specific brake cleaner to degrease surfaces. A clean rotor optimizes performance and reduces noise.
  • Rotor compatibility: Sintered metal pads require stainless steel rotors (modern MTB standard). Not compatible with cast iron rotors (rare in MTB).
  • Storage: Store in a dry place, away from contaminants (oil, grease) that would degrade the compound.

Why choose Brake Authority?

Brake Authority has established itself as a global reference in high-end MTB pads and rotors. The result of ten years of experience in off-road motorcycle competition, the brand transfers this expertise to cycling with products certified UNI EN ISO 9001:2000 and manufactured according to strict European standards. Burly pads embody the brand's philosophy: absolute reliability, consistent performance, record longevity. Adopted by XC competitors and demanding AM/Enduro riders, they constitute an excellent quality-price-durability ratio compared to OEM pads.
