The Hutchinson Challenger TLR represents the culmination of over 130 years of French expertise in bicycle tires. Designed for demanding cyclists who refuse any compromise, this Tubeless Ready ultra-endurance tire redefines the standards in terms of longevity, comfort and puncture resistance. Manufactured in France in Chalette-sur-Loing, it embodies the promise of a tire capable of handling 10,000 km without fail, whatever the weather conditions.

Revolutionary HARDSHIELD™ and AIRSHIELD™ Technologies

  • HARDSHIELD™ — Next-generation puncture protection: This unique system combines two complementary protective layers. A wide polyamide reinforcement covers the entire width of the tread, while a narrower band of ultra-resistant aramid threads concentrates protection on the ground contact zone. In rigorous comparative testing, the Challenger TLR resisted puncture forces up to 170 Newtons, a 100% increase in resistance compared to certain competitors.
  • AIRSHIELD™ — Maximum sealing and zero pressure loss: Hutchinson integrates two high-performance sealing compounds that coat the inside of the tire and the bead. The flexible butyl layer adapts to tire deformations and maintains an airtight seal with the rim. An additional anti-abrasion coating surrounds the bead to guarantee a perfect connection. This technology eliminates chronic pressure loss problems with tubeless and even allows use without sealant (although it remains recommended for maximum protection).

Carcass and Endurance Bi-Compound rubber

The Challenger TLR is based on a 3×127 TPI nylon carcass offering the ideal compromise between suppleness, strength and weight. The tread uses Hutchinson's new Endurance Bi-Compound: soft rubber shoulders (53 ShA) ensure impeccable grip in corners and on wet surfaces, while the hard rubber center (62 ShA) with 2.3 mm thickness minimizes rolling resistance and maximizes abrasion resistance. This exceptional thickness guarantees the record longevity of 10,000 km announced by the manufacturer, confirmed by numerous user reports after more than 9,000 km without significant wear.

Available variants

  • 700x25C (25-622): Narrow version for speed purists, not compatible with Hookless rims, weight optimized for performance.
  • 700x28C (28-622): The versatile format par excellence, weight approx. 385-398g depending on measurements, compatible with Hookless rims, perfect comfort/performance balance.
  • 700x32C (32-622): Comfort format with increased versatility, weight approx. 400g, compatible with Hookless rims, ideal for long distances and mixed terrain.
  • 700x35C (35-622): All-road version for maximum comfort and versatility on asphalt and paths, measured width up to 36.5mm on 22mm internal width rim.

Terrain performance and 4-season versatility

Tested and approved during the Transcontinental Race, one of the most demanding ultra-endurance events in the world, the Challenger TLR inspires absolute confidence in all circumstances. On dry roads, the hard center compound offers fast rolling and a responsive feel. On wet pavement, the soft shoulders and tread grooves guarantee reassuring grip, even in committed downhill corners. In cold weather, the tire retains its properties without hardening (except in icy conditions). Its robust construction also makes it capable of handling light mixed surfaces: fine gravel, cobblestones, chip-seal, without showing signs of premature degradation.

Installation and compatibility

The Challenger TLR mounts on Tubeless Ready rims with tubeless rim tape, tubeless valves and recommended sealant (although optional thanks to AIRSHIELD™). The 28C and 32C versions are certified Hookless rim compatible, offering maximum flexibility for modern wheelsets. Initial installation may require some force to position the bead (a consequence of AIRSHIELD™ sealing), but subsequent removal and reinstallation are easier. Pressure retention between rides is excellent, even without sealant, confirming the effectiveness of the sealing system.

Heritage and French manufacturing

Hutchinson has been manufacturing bicycle tires since 1890 in its historic factory in Chalette-sur-Loing, near Montargis. It is today the only bicycle tire manufacturer still operating in France. Pioneer of road tubeless (UST standard in 2006), kevlar in cycling tires and numerous innovations, Hutchinson perpetuates century-old expertise in each Challenger TLR. The high-end range, which includes the Challenger TLR, is entirely designed and produced in France, guaranteeing rigorous quality standards and direct access to the Racing Lab for developing new technologies alongside professional athletes.
